Our Program

READING RAILROAD OF HAYWOOD COUNTY

Through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library we can provide every Haywood County child under the age of five with a free book every month by mail. We've put over 100,00 free books into the hands of Haywood County preschool children since becoming an affiliate of Dolly's Imagination Library in 2004. We're helping prepare our children to read and to learn.

Dolly's Imagination Library is popular and well regarded in Haywood County, by both parents and teachers. Typical comments from families are, "I believe this program is wonderful at getting children interested in reading”; “My children love these books. Thank you." Another said, "We really enjoy reading books together. They love to have a book come for them in the mailbox each month.” Teachers indicate that children who have participated in the program are better prepared for school than those who have not.

Haywood County support is important. We depend on individuals, businesses, and organizations as well as city, county and state government for funding and to help us reach families of young children. The Elma Ross Public Library, Department of Human Services, the Head Start program, schools, and County Health Department all distribute our enrollment brochures and encourage families to enroll their young children.

Our goal is to help Haywood County children achieve success in education and in life. We want Haywood County children to become responsible, literate adults who are able to obtain good paying jobs, comfortably raise a family and be a credit to, and participate in, their community.

Major funding for Reading Railroad comes from the United Way, Brownsville Rotary Club, the City of Brownsville, Haywood County, Governors Books From Birth Foundation and from generous donations from area businesses, associations, and individuals.
